Jewelry for the Kitchen

The fashion-conscious have known for years that the look of an outfit can be completely changed with different accessories, such as scarves, belts or jewelry. In the same way, one of the fastest, easiest ways to update your cabinetry is with new decorative hardware.

The current trend in cabinetry knobs and pulls is toward a relatively streamlined look, according to designers interviewed by a national publication. Even in traditional rooms, the look is less fussy and cluttered. Transitional looks such as Arts & Crafts are popular with homeowners who want a warm but clean-lined look. Reflecting increased appreciation for quality craftsmanship, some designers are seeing a swing toward “old school” designs with a handmade appearance. In some areas, the urban industrial look is an important trend, seen in hardware with a very utilitarian look.

Another trend is toward extremes in size. Small and simple hardware lends itself to minimalist design, while oversize knobs and bar pulls offer the imposing scale that works well in today’s larger kitchens.

Among the most popular hardware finishes, matte black iron is emerging as a “big statement” for this year, working well with styles from antique to cutting edge. Oil-rubbed bronze is still a strong favorite, originally seen primarily with earthy, rustic looks, but now also moving into the contemporary market. Steel hardware is often used in kitchens with stainless steel appliances for a uniform look.
