Cabinets become works of art The outer edges of a cabinet door can resemble a picture frame, so perhaps it’s not surprising that creative homeowners might use them for exactly that purpose.
Inspired by a trend seen in Europe, homeowners and designers are using flat-paneled cabinet doors as showcases for artwork. In Garnerville, New York, designer Mike Nazer of Rockland Kitchens carried the concept a step further. Looking for new artistic expressions to offer his kitchen design clients, Nazer established the “Art Meets Industry” competition, inviting area artists to create original works of art on Decora´ maple cabinet doors.
The contest drew entries from 54 artists working in a variety of media, including acrylic paint, gold leaf, decoupage, hand carving, and leaded glass, with diverse themes and designs to suit virtually any homeowner’s personal taste and interior decor. Cash prizes were awarded to the three winning designs, which along with twelve other doors make up a special display in Rockland Kitchens’ showroom. Clients looking for a one-of-a-kind accent for their kitchen may purchase doors from the showroom display or commission original work from any of the participating artists.
In other areas, local artists can doubtless be found to carry out a homeowner’s special vision with a custom-created cabinet door. It’s an exciting new way for homeowners to express their personal style. |
