| Composite Board | A panel made from wood fiber (chips, dust, strands or other forms) and resin. |
| CSA | Canada's National Sustainable Forest Management Standard. |
| CWP | Composite Wood Products. The subject of a recent CARB ACTM to reduce formaldehyde emissions. This includes particleboard, hardwood plywood and medium density fiberboard. |
| Energy Star | A joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy that sets guidelines for rating products energy efficiency. |
| EPP | Environmentally Preferable Product. A product designation used for PB and MDF that meet formaldehyde emission levels and are made from 100% recycled/recovered wood fiber. |
| ESP | Environmental Stewardship Program. A voluntary certification program sponsored by the KCMA that recognizes cabinet manufacturers for demonstrating environmental leadership in their products and processes. |
| Forest management program | Any of a number of programs created and administered by forest advocacy groups. The main premise of these programs is the harvesting of the trees is done with minimal damage to the overall forest habitat. Guidelines cover the harvest, replanting, access road construction, erosion control and many other aspects of managing a forest for timber production. |

In high concentrations, it is suspected to cause certain types of cancer. It has many industrial and commercial uses in thousands of commonly found products. |
| FSC | Forest Stewardship Council. A group which has defined guidelines for proper management of timber lands and certifies landowners who follow its practices. |
| FSC certified wood | Wood harvested from forests that are managed per the FSC program. The forest owner must become a member of FSC and have a third party audit their compliance to the practices required. All parties that handle the wood, from the sawmill to the cabinet manufacturer, must become an FSC member and be audited to offer the FSC certified logo on the label. FSC is the only forest management program recognized by the U.S. GBC. |
| Hardwood plywood | Hardwood plywood (HWPW) means a panel composed of an assembly of (A) hardwood layers or plies of veneer or (B) veneers in combination with a platform consisting of lumber core, composite core, a special core material, or special back material, joined with an adhesive. (As defined by CARB.) |
| HWPW-CC | Hardwood Plywood with a Composite Core. This is board that is made up of a hardwood face veneer on one or both sides of a PB or MDF panel. |
| HWPW-VC | Hardwood Plywood with a Veneer Core. This is what has traditionally called plywood in the US. A board is built up of thin sheets of wood glued up in stacks with the layers alternating in direction at 90 degrees to the prior layer. Often found in 5, 7 & 9 plies. |
